The Cool

Giant Lion jewelry, organic, luxurious, seriously cool.

Monday Jam x Rose Rouge

For the first time in a long while I had a really good, really relaxing weekend. So relaxing in fact that it's made me too lazy to do anything but I have to remind myself that finals (finals!!) are coming up soon and there is little time to waste. I decided to make St Germain's 'Rose Rouge' the Monday Jam because after all these years it's still one of my favourite songs; it's relaxed but its not overly relaxed -  a perfect song to ease one into the chaos of the week, if you're feeling as lazy as I am.

WKND Special

Johannesburg, there is something I don't like about you. I don't know if it's your concrete buildings, your propensity for materialism or your intimidatingly fast-paced lifestyle but my thoughts of you are often unaccompanied by fondness. But then Johannesburg, you do this - you create The WKND Social and combine three of my favourtie things; food, music and box braids. It is these kinds of things that make me re-consider where you and I stand; that make me think that perhaps there's more to you than Sandton and Soweto and that maybe there is a chance that you and I could vibe. I apologise for my unfair pseudo-notions, truth is,  I'm slowly beginning to realise that you're way cooler than I'd always thought. Way cooler.

Helen Folasade Adu

This past weekend style.com named Sade their beauty icon of the month; I'm so glad and I think it's about time. When I was younger (about 10 or 11) my older brother and sister would always listen to her songs and my narrow, childish mind couldn't see the appeal of Sade's deep, sultry vocals - they just made me sad. But now (thank God) I'm all grown up (ish) and I can finally appreciate the rasp in her voice, the depth in her songs, and her influence on fashion and music world wide.
If you ever put on a bold red lip, have a sleek 'push back' with a long braid and gold hoops you are channeling Sade, whether you know it or not.

Monday Jam x Hear Ye

I've been playing this song the whole weekend, my sincerest apologies to my neighbors who have been subjected to my amateur attempts at 'spitting rhymes' like Pharrell and T.I. Apologies also to my poor neck that has been subject to my constant head bopping like a hip hop aficionado for the past three days. I don't know, this song just ... does that to a person. Press play and see for yourself.
Happy Monday!

The African Equivalent

Michelle Oberholzer, the mastermind behind the South African street style blog "Cinder & Skylark" and a regular on my blog-roll; Michelle, to me, is the African equivalent of Scott Schuman (also known as the 'The Sartorialist'). I know there are also very good local street style photographers who do what they do really well but I find that I gravitate more towards Michelle's work. What I appreciate most about Cinder & Skylark is that it doesn't showcase conventionally stylish people or even those who are 'on trend'. Michelle takes pictures of the fearless, she snaps those individuals whose outfits many times teeter on the thin line between ingenious and disastrous. She sees the crazy, the sexy and the uber cool, those a little less refined, a little rough around the edges, a whole lot more experimental and because of that a whole lot more beautiful.

Mother may I?

I love the small and subtle details, the pony hair, the metal plating. Absolute perfection.

I hope you guys like the slight changes I made to the blog, well, I didn't make them my friend Chizzo hooked me up, thanks Chizz!

Midweek Jam x Losing You

This is the official video for Solange's new song "Losing You"; hai, you know I don't think I'm going to go into specifics about this video just yet - I'm going to give it what it deserves and hopefully, sometime soon, write up a post about it's epicness (because , believe me the video is epic) including the clothes and inspiration behind the whole thing. For now though, please enjoy this amazing song who's video is quirky and fun but seriously cool.
And can I just say that finally the world is beginning to appreciate this continent for all that it has to offer! High five to Africa I say (it's about damn time)!

Project Droomer

Cleo Droomer, winner of the 2011 Elle New Talent Designer Search, and one of my favourite names in African fashion, just did a second collab with Mr Price. I must say I am very excited about it and I can't wait until all of these amazing ensembles get to pretty little Grahamstown, which could be anywhere between now and...next September.
Shout-out to one of my favourite models Kaone Kairo who is just working these clothes, go gel.

The Kids

I really was supposed to show you a whole lot of other pictures of my trip to Tanzania, apologies; I am the worst planner (not very organised, ever) and due to work (and lack of planning) I have been putting off another Tanzania post for a long while.  I also realise that I haven't been posting as much as I usually do and again I apologise, I personally hate it when bloggers don't blog at least twice a week (I mean, I need a constant source of procrastination inspiration!) but let me just tell you - University is a *insert expletive you wouldn't normally use around your mother*! The academic climate right now is tough but I will make sure I post as much as I usually do, really I will.

Well the pictures you are about to see now are of the cuuuutest kids in the world; I have a huge family in Tanzania so I met many many cousins, aunts, uncles, and children  - lots of children! These are the ones I took pictures of when I wasn't too overwhelmed by the all the love and cuteness around me and remembered I owned a camera.
