Ulgh, Braam you're so cool.

I'd by lying if I told you that I wasn't phased by that peri-urban, new age  hipster-slash-cool people cultural hub that is Braamfontein. I, like many others who appreciate anything that might symbolise some type of defection from the mainstream, am profoundly fond of this place that's been garnering so much local and international attention. Not only am I fond of it but I'm also quite proud of it; I am proud that this eclectic, creative space exists right here in Africa, Braam is not only the holy grail of hipsterdom but it is the proverbial middle finger to all African skeptics, a collective "how'd you like them apples" to those who have the annoying tendency of associating Africa with perpetual hunger and that catch Kony movement.

I mean...its not Soho ...but dammit, it'll do.

  1. I lived in Braam for four years, and it was always buzzing. I feel like I left before it *really got interesting. Juta Street is everything right now. If you have time, go by 86Public- if you don't actually want a pizza, you can just take selfies near the cool woodfired oven! :D
Also: Wits Art Museum. The interactive exhibits they had last year were quite an experience, but there is always something new going on there.

But now you see, you're making me miss my old home when I'm supposed to be working on settling into my new one all the way here in Cape Town... :(

P.S.: What were you doing in Gauteng- I thought you were continuing post grad at Stellies...?

  2. Thanks for all the suggestions! I'll be sure to drop by all those places when I'm in Joburg. I am doing to my postgrad in Stellies but I was inspired to talk about Braam for a minute...hope CT is treating you well :)
