WOMEN'S WEEK.

ELLE US May 2011.

Its Women's Day in South Africa this week - a day when we (well, most of us) celebrate and remember the thousands of women who fought against Apartheid, more specifically, those women who protested against the Apartheid pass laws on the 9th of August 1956, fifty five years ago. So I thought it would only be fitting if I showcased a number of women who entertain, inspire and motivate me - I will be doing this all week and I hope you guys enjoy it!

First up: Adele.
Born Adele Laurie Blue Adkins, this awe inspiring songstress was raised by a single mother in West Norwood, South London and graduated from The BRIT School for Performing Arts in 2006 (the school which also, might I add, gave rise to Amy Winehouse, Jessie J and Leona Lewis). Despite the fact that she has won a number of grammys and her recent album 21  has gone platinum ten times over (What?!) I admire this girl for other reasons as well -- more specifically -- her nonchalant attitude with regards to beauty and weight in the music industry:

"I like eating fine foods and drinking nice wine. Even if I had a really good figure, I don't think I'd get my t**s and a** out for no one...
I don’t make music for eyes, I make music for ears." -(Rolling Stone April 2011)

A long time ago you actually had to know how to sing to become successful, the looks were just the icing on the shallow-cake, but nowadays, unless you look a certain way, and you weigh a certain amount (which is usually next to nothing) you can only get so far no matter how much talent you have -- Adele gracefully and effortlessly flicks a middle finger to all those notions, she won't let them bother her, and she won't let them bring her down - she's an artist first and foremost.
Bravo.
